Lower East Side, Manhattan

The Lower East Side is a Manhattan neighborhood that has been placed on the list of America’s Most Endangered Places by The National Trust for Historic Preservation due to gentrification. The rapidly vanishing tenements are reminiscent of an era when immigrants flooded the neighborhood for cheap lodgings. High-rise apartments are the new fad as businesses cater to a new clientele offering customized leather jackets and dominatrix clothing with the streets proudly displaying the sign ‘Best bargains in America’. The neighborhood often referred to as a melting pot of ethnicities, houses many old churches, synagogues and art galleries and is the place to visit for the best pastrami sandwiches in New York.
